Students model one-of-a-kind creations made with paper and tape

Ada Weeks' statement kept the parade of ingenuity flowing smoothly across the stage.

"Lover it! Beautiful," she said under her breath as students in her entry-focus be fashion design class modeled their creations before an audience at Liberty Aged School's performing arts center.

"Don't be nervous to come out a little further," Weeks coaxed one of the shyer teens. "Don't look at the bottom."

The quirky melange of outfits was a world away from the merry-fashion couture of Dior and Chanel, but they were creative in their own right: After all, the assignment had been to stratagem and assemble a skirt out of paper and duct tape alone.

The projects included a flared, pleated portion made from the pages of two telephone books, and one fashioned out of binder paper and Appointment-it Notes arranged in a checkerboard pattern.

One girl wowed the assess with her voluminous ballerina skirt of pink and white tissue autograph, which she had attached to a glittering corset cut from a plastic tablecloth and accented with rhinestones and ribbons.

"This is the surpass prom dress ever! I want that!" laughed an enthusiastic Michelle Previous to, who was there from San Francisco's Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising to choose the alluring entries.

Weeks has the five dozen students in her beginning and advanced sewing courses use tabloid and tape so they can experiment on the cheap instead of going through bolts of structure.

Their task is to fit the garment to their waist and hips using gores, tucks, pleats, darts or gathers, as well as draw up an underskirt to help it hold its shape.

"This was not just fun and spoil but structural issues that each student had to understand," said Weeks, a former seamstress who specialized in practice wedding dresses and formal wear.

Encouraged to let their imagination run trap, students applied the tailoring principles to skirts they constructed with everything from flattened power boxes, tiers of soda cans, and layers of paper coffee filters to newspapers, printer typescript, and cardboard tubes from rolls of paper towels.

In preparing them for the fashion show, Weeks encourages considerable posture by having students walk with textbooks balanced on their heads. She adds an English practice for good measure, requiring them to describe their project in writing - and proper grammar is a must. Weeks uses the tidings to provide a breezy commentary during the show.

The class is bringing Jordan Largent one route closer to her dream designing costumes in the film industry.

Although the Oakley, Calif. 17-year-old has been sewing since she took where it hurts economics in middle school, she's preparing for fashion design school after graduation by enrolling in Weeks' classes.

For Gabby Espejel, the biggest call into doubt of learning to sew is learning patience.

"When I make mistakes I have to start over," said the 16-year-old, who's toying with the inkling of a career as a hair and makeup stylist for runway models.

Weeks reminds students that sewing offers objective rewards in the present as well: Tailor-made clothes always fit better than off-the-rack styles, she said.

Do-it-yourselfers also can guarantee their creations are well made; with mass-produced clothes, plaids on adjoining panels of organization don't always match up and hem lines can be uneven, Weeks said.

Prepubescent people also can save money if they know how to repair a tear in a jacket or compress a hem, she added.

What's more, the girl who can make one-of-a-kind outfits want not worry about running into someone else wearing the same dress at the senior prom, Weeks said.

With the grasp-how he's acquiring, freshman Andrew Vail hopes eventually to baby Scottish battledress that he can wear to the Renaissance fairs he attends with his progenitor and younger brother.

"It's kind of cool to be familiar with that you're able to make your own stuff," said the 15-year-old, who's the lone boy in his class and, to his knowledge, the only one among his male friends who can handle a needle and sewing motor.

Weeks acknowledges that teens in this digital age might consider needlework an outdated diversion, noting that some didn't even know how to thread a needle when they signed up for her grade.

"They can all text until the cows come home but they can't do old-fashioned things," she said.

But uninitiated people gain confidence as they learn to work with their hands, she says, and with skills that they can devote to other creative outlets such as embroidery and quilting they can become more well-rounded.

Even in the 21st century "they still sine qua non to work with their hands," Weeks said. "I'm stressful to keep that alive.
