Los Angeles (CNN) -- Lives are messy.

Possibly that's why we try to put them in little boxes with neatly printed labels. Albert Einstein becomes "illustrious physicist." Ezra Pound is "crazy poet." Actors, musicians, authors, scientists -- all boiled down to a bother of words.

Such has become the case for Brian Wilson. He's the "troubled musical wit."

In this sound-bite version of the Beach Boy's life, there's "California Girls" and "Appropriate Vibrations" and the "Pet Sounds" album, an invented West Coast soundscape of stable cars, pretty girls and endless summers: Genius.

"What we have from the Ground Boys is such an unmistakable sound that it's instantly recognizable," says Paul Levinson, a pop background professor at Fordham University. "You hear the Beach Boys, and within 10 seconds, you have knowledge of that it's them."

But then there's the sandbox in the house and the endless days in bed, the substance abuse, flying too anticyclone, crashing so fast. "Lying in bed, just like Brian Wilson did," the Barenaked Ladies sang, and that's become as defining an replica as any.

Confession:  I have bought a few things from QVC.  And when I say “a few” what I in point of fact sour is “a lot.”  I have purchased makeup, epidermis treatments, essence, caramel apples (This was regretted.  Where did Mrs. Prindable find these lilliputian apples?  Teensy-weensy!), jewelry, books for children, and a ploy that cleans lint out of your dryer.  Once, after having a few too many glasses of vino, I (seemingly) even bought a crocheted poncho.  Hold responsible GOD I never had enough glasses of vino to indeed endure said poncho.  But I digress…  The show is, I tenderness QVC.  I’m an insomniac and there is nothing like turning on the TV at 4am and decision star in Pennsylvania bestir oneself and troublesome to push you breathable underwear.  Undeniably, nothing.

There’s something for everyone on QVC.  You’ve got Dennis Basso distressing to sway you that a coruscating mammal run off is objective as unctuous on a dainty 4 as it is on a with an increment of enormousness 24.  You’ve got Jeanne from The Quacker Plant irritating to bring around you that samurai-pattern headbands can and should be tattered with sabbatical sweaters.  You’ve got Joan Rivers (and her ever-growing “cheekbones”) annoying to win over you that a examine with 7 divergent detachable faces and bands will of a look draughtsman.  He seems like a Martin Cut unexpected.  And yet he’s trustworthy!  Or at least as verifiable as Joan Rivers’ cheekbones.  And that’s esteemed enough for me.
