Only mountaineering, boxing, edibles tennis and athletics have significantly improved once-a-week participation since 2007-08, when the Workers government announced their target of increasing the numbers regularly playing entertainment by a million by 2012-13 (the increase currently is 111,800).

Young adults and women are especially inactive. It doesn’t help that in austerity Britain, leftover money for sport has disappeared.

Playing fields have long been built on and native councils don’t have the money to throw at grotty free time centres, and won’t have for years.

These things matter. Imagine a metropolitan pool in England, then a sunny lido in Australia. Which is the more seductive? But regardless of facilities, there is a deeper truth here.

Many of us love skip about, watching it, listening to it, talking about it. But perhaps, like Serena Williams, most of us don’t literally like doing it very much.

On this North Atlantic island it is often thoroughly and wet and sometimes playing sport hurts a bit and is actually pretty unappetising. It takes up without surcease that we either haven’t got or would rather use in other ways.
