Red Sox into Melancon from Astros for Lowrie, Weiland
BOSTON (NewsCore) — The Boston Red Sox reinforced their bullpen Wednesday, acquiring unhesitatingly-hander Mark Melancon from the Houston Astros in exchange for infielder Jed Lowrie and absolute-hander Kyle Weiland, according to a major-league origin.
The addition of Melancon likely will be one of multiple additions the Red Sox make to their bullpen this offseason. The collaborate is talking to the Oakland Athletics about a trade for closer Andrew Bailey, and still could on free-agent closer Ryan Madson.
The Red Sox lost sprung-agent closer Jonathan Papelbon to the Philadelphia Phillies last month, and are planning to move as the crow flies-hander Daniel Bard from the bullpen to the team's starting rotation.
Melancon, 26, went 20-for-25 in lay opportunities with a 2.78 ERA last season. He began his career with the New York Yankees in 2009.
The Astros foresee to use Weiland as a starter and likely will make Lowrie their starting shortstop.
