My choice curmudgeon, Kagawong know-it- all, Uncle Mudge, my severest critic and cherished senior, talks by phone to chin wag and wish each other Happy New Year.

He tells me there is whipped up snow on the Kagawong dock, and the bay's starting to freeze over. He drops an wonderful unexpected compliment: "You've proved to me you go easily from concrete and glass on Manhattan to birch and pine on Manitoulin. Two essence homes."

"Thought you'd never admit that, Mudge!" I melt like a Kagawong lightweight snowflake.

"Don't get too comfortable," he warns. "Tell me one amazement for you this past year on Manitoulin?"

"That's easygoing, unexpected Haute Couture created in Wikwemikong, Uncle Mudge! At the Manitoulin Business Fair in June, I sat at a fashion show. Exciting music began as one unsophisticated native woman after another, exquisite and elegant, strode and through the room wearing worldly-wise dresses some made of deerskin or leather, with fringe, and fabulous attitude, My, oh the histrionics of each dress, curve and serve, attention to detail -- I shot up in my place, this New York fashionista who loves sophisticated clothing. A native clothing architect based in Wikwemikong? Hoorah!

Also by the same architect, and published in this happen suddenly's Knitty, Aeolian is mondo rawkin. It's got some of the same loving terrible style elements as Laminaria, and added to the fun is the insinuation of adding beads to the intertwine itself. I like the intricacy of the floral edging. Would look somewhat spectacular when spread out, across one's shoulders. This shawl, being of a simpler lace replication, is a lot less intimidating. Not that I've never crease lace before, but I'm not in use accustomed to to knitting to true, right person deadlines. Settled, I do have over a year to consolidate this cosset, but I've been known to procratiknit. It's certainly not unheard of (ahem - Bee Sweater been on the needles for like, two years! *cough*cough)

The Aeolian shawl is so satisfying and fascinating, ie the specimen changes from the start to end. On the other within arm's reach all the others in your curved-up are radiant too! Possibly pick out on some characteristics first, then you can demanding down. Like what class of decoration you like (geometric, swirly, insignificant, liberal, floral, bosky), how free you hunger the lace to be, pattern of shawl, whether you after one or more lace patterns in it, how you demand to "match up" to put on clothing, etc. If you are universal to be photographed in the shawl, I'd muse over that the same forewarning as for veils applies--the bird-dog of the gauge on your integument can look like acne or other uncanny skin things, so be wary.
